Jeju Island The Road Journey of Chasing Sun

Jeju Itinerary: 6-Days Self Drive Road Trip Travel Blog

Last updated on May 11th, 2024

Whether you’re in the mood for an exciting road trip, sign-seeing, food hunt, beach gateway, or volcanic mountain hiking, 6 days Jeju self driving itinerary awaiting you.

Jeju Island (제주도, 濟州島, Jeju-do) is pretty small and the best way to explore the natural beauty of Jeju Island is self-driving. The round island trip can be done in a few days from 3 days to 7 days depending on your point of interest.

While most would recommend spending just 3 or 4 days in Jeju, we felt the 5 days road trip itinerary is the best and relaxing without skipping any of the cool stunning natural beauty. We spend another one more day conquering the summit of Mount Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea, which ended with a total of 6 days at Jeju Island.

Beware of this Jeju travel blog post as my Jeju self driving itinerary is not a budget trip. I enjoyed my travel time watching the gushing waterfall, and crystal clear beaches, hiking up to South Korea’s highest mountain – Mount Hallasan and watching the sunrise at the New Seven Natural Wonder of Seongsan ilchulbong crater. And I also enjoyed my foodie hunt for live octopus and abalone seafood pot, grilled black pork BBQ, fresh seafood caught by haenyeo (female free divers), and a relaxing time at a Korean café.

There are many things to do in Jeju island. We have the best pick a few attractions that we love the most to visit. Free free to click on each section to read on my Jeju travel blog below.

Jeju Island Travel Tips

Jeju Road Trip

Tips#1: Rent A Car For Wonderful Road Trip

Renting a car for self-driving to discover the natural beauty at your own pace is the best way to travel at Jeju Island. We have to rent a car for my Jeju road trip through RentalCars from Booking.com, rented through AJ Rent A Car Company.

AJ Rent A Car is Avis in South Korea with English spoken staff supported, which is important for foreigners like us. We booked our car for two months in advance to ensure availability. See How To Rent And Picked Up Our Rental Car when we arrived at Jeju Airport.

Tips#2: Jeju Island Is Relatively Small

Jeju Island is a volcanic island, dominated by Hallasan at the center of the Island. The driving distance from North of Jeju City to South of Seogwipo is only required 1 hour or a little more by passing through the center of Hallasan. Alternatively, a traveler can choose for two hours of road journey by driving through the east or west coastline.

Tips#3: Planning Your Jeju Driving Route

The land area of Jeju Island is relatively small at merely 1849km2. Planning the order of places to visit wasn’t difficult. The best way is just to go one round and stay at different places to minimize the traveling time.

Getting There

Jeju Island is a Korean favorite domestic holiday destination, situated 90km away from the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula. It is served by Jeju International Airport in Jeju City with domestic flights like Eastar, Jin Air, T’way Air from Seoul, Busan, etc, or international flight from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, and Malaysia. Alternatively, travelers can be accessed Jeju Island by ferry from Busan.

My travel tips! What I normally do is found and booked my cheapest fight deal with Skyscanner! And the same for my Jeju trip. It is very simple and addicting to look for my next travel destination.

Where To Stay

Yedaoom Pension

As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, my Jeju road trip is not a budget trip and most of our accommodation chosen is seaside pension or hotels with sea views designed for relaxation.

However, out of our expectations, the accommodation cost at Jeju Island is relatively cheap, ranging from ₩40,000 to ₩100,000 for a double room. Families with more members can get an even cheaper price for the entire pension. The accommodation at Jeju City is slightly higher compared with Seogwipo.

To make your vacation easy, check out our accommodation guide to find out where to stay in Jeju. Your stay decide how’s your holiday!

Yongduam Rock (Dragon Head Rock) (용두암)

Wide range of restaurants that specialize in black pork in a row at Black pork street. The black pork BBQ is one of the Jeju delicacies and I have put it as one of the must-eat at my Jeju foodie hunt. You won’t go wrong with any of the restaurants here!

We choose the high-rated restaurant, Dombedon for our first dinner at Jeju Island.

See our Dining Experience At Dombedon.

Stay: Hotel Whistle Lark

Hotel Whistle Interior

Whistle Lark Hotel is a newly open hotel, located in Jeju old town. It is strategically located within walking distance to Dungmun Market, E-mart, black pork street, sashimi street, and Jungang underground shopping street. A good location with easy access to lots of eateries, shopping, and the city’s top sight.

Nearby with other 4-star and 5-star hotels: Ocean Suites Hotel and Hotel Regent Marine The Blue

Day 2: Jeju West Coastline

The second day on the Jeju road journey started with mouth-watering pork noodles at Jamae Guksu. We continue our driving journey to Jeju Osulloc Tea Museum and Innisfree Jeju House for a brief visit. The whole journey takes an approximate 1-hour drive from Jeju city. After the break, we are heading to the highlight of the day – Yongmeori Coast.

Sister Noodles (Jamae Guksu /자매국수)

Gogi Guksu

Located at Guksu Geori (Noodle Street) in Jeju city, Jamae Guksu is one of the hidden gem restaurants which very famous among the locals. It is well known for Bibim Guksu (비빔국수 / mixed spicy noodles) and Gogi Guksu (고기국수 / pork noodle soup).

You probably will need to wait in line to taste these noodles, and you won’t regret giving them a try. Price is relatively cheap, ₩7,000 to ₩8000 (less than $8) for a large bowl of noodles with several pork slices and customary side dishes.

Check out our Food Review At Sister Noodles!

Jeju O’sulloc Tea Museum (오설록티뮤지엄)

O’sulloc Tea Museum Entrance

The famous O’Sulloc Tea Museum is a place you should not miss for tea lovers. Instead of the museum, the cafe located in the museum catches our intention to pay for the visit. The cafe was crowded with tourists and they formed a long line to order food and drinks.

Follow the small path beside the museum will leading to Innisfree Jeju House. Innisfree is a Korean company selling skincare products made from natural ingredients in Jeju.

There was another cafe in Innisfree too if you don’t want to wait too long at O’Sulloc café. The crowd is much less at Innisfree café. You may also try their soap-making workshop at Innisfree Jeju!

Yongmeori Coast (용머리해안)

One of my favorite places to visit in Jeju. The breathtaking view of rock formations, the sea, and the sky! Yongmeori Coast is a rocky coastline where Mt Sanbangsan stretches into the ocean and features unique cliff formations that have turned the coast into a stunning walk.

Meet the Haenyeos, women sea-divers of Jeju who sell fresh raw seafood like sea cucumber, sea snail, and sea squirt.

Stay: Jeju Aurum Pension

View at Jeju Aurum

That night, we stayed at Jeju Aurum, a family-run pension at Seogwipo. It is a lava beach front pension with a beautiful sunrise view that can be seen at the front. Our host, Mr. Kim is very friendly and nice.

Limited rooms are available, so don’t forget to book your room as earlier as possible.

Day 3: Jeju South Coastline (Seongwipo)

We started our journey late as we wake up and catch the sunrise at 5 a.m. from our pension. We just need to wake up and cross the road to the seafront to wait for the sun to come up. The view is spectacular!

Jeju is gifted by heaven with 3 famous waterfalls: Jeongbang waterfall, Cheonjiyeon waterfalls, and Cheonjeyeon Waterfalls. All of them are located at Seowigpo, the Southern part of Jeju Island. We did not go to all and instead only choose one of them, the Jeongbang waterfall.

Jeongbang Waterfall (정방폭포)

Jeongbang Waterfall

Jeongbang Waterfall is the only waterfall in Asia that falls into the ocean. This was a beautiful place to be in the morning, there was just a bit of rainbow in the mist at the bottom of the waterfall.

To reach the bottom of the waterfall, you need to fight several steps and some big slippery rocks to get the best vantage point for viewing.

The view is magnificent!

Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market
(서귀포매일 올레시장)

Food Hunt at Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market

Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market is one of the traditional markets located in southern Jeju. Wide variety of goodies like souvenirs, fresh produce, meats, seafood, and other things.

Seats are lined along the middle of the market and customers are more comfortable enjoying their food in the seats. Snack food like black pork and crab croquettes, gimbap (Korean rice roll in seaweed), fried chicken, and rice cake can be found at the market.

Seopjikoji (섭지코지)

Seopjikoji

Lastly, we ended our exploration at the South coast and drove the Seopjikoji. Located at end of the eastern shore, Seopjikoji is a popular attraction in Jeju, thanks to its appearance in the Korean drama scene. But don’t get me wrong. Seopjikoji is a fantastic scenery for a coastal walk.

Walking along the coast awarded with spectacular and breathtaking. Make sure to visit Seopjikoji during spring. It is one of the best places for blooming canola fields on Jeju Island.

  • Address: 107, Seopjikoji-ro, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do
  • Opening Hours: Always Open
  • Admission: Free but with parking fee of ₩1000
  • Korea GPS Tel No: 784-2810

Stay: B&Sun Pension

B&Sun Pension Jeju

We stayed at B&Sun Pension run by ahjumma. It is a 4 stories building and the ahjumma with family are staying on the second floor. The remaining rooms are rented out as bed and breakfast to guests. It is a pretty cozy room with a microwave, kitchenware, washing machine, TV, and other electronic devices well equipped. The location is only less than 10 minutes drive to the Seongsan Ilchulbong.

Day 4: Jeju East Coastline

Jeju east coast is the best scenic destination you should not miss on your Jeju trip. It is very perfect to coupled up the Sunrise Peak Seongsan Iluchulbong and Udo Island in one day as both are located very close. Our day 4 Jeju itinerary are focusing on these two popular attractions. If you have more time, you can consider going to Manjanggul Lava Tube.

Sunrise at Seongsan Ilchulbong (성산일출봉)

Sun Rise At Seongsan Ilchulbong

Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as ‘Sunrise Peak’, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Jeju Island’s most famous geographical features. Listed in the new seven wonders of the world, Seongsan llchulbong is a tuff cone crater that was formed when the volcano erupted under the ocean about 5000 years ago.

There are also Haenyeos showtimes at 1.30 pm and 3.00 pm daily. Be there earlier to get a first-row view of the action if you wish to see the performance.

  • Address: 284-12, Ilchul-ro, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do , South Korea

  • Admission: ₩2,000
  • Korea GPS Tel No: 733-1530

Udo Island (우도)

Udo Island

A miniature of Jeju island with beautiful beaches, lava rocks, cliffs, and scenery along the coastal road. Prepare to spend a day relaxing in a peaceful atmosphere with no crowd, no nightlife, and no major attraction but beautiful nature.

The name “Udo” was given because it resembles the shape of a lying cow. The ferry departs from the Seongsan Passenger Terminal Port every 30 minutes and it takes around 15 minutes to reach Udo Island.

Elecrical Car At Udo

The round island journey can be finished by walking a total length of 16 km of the Udo Olle trail. Travelers can also rent a bicycle, electric bike, scooter, electrical car, ATV, or take the hop-on-hop-off tour bus to go round the Udo Island.

  • Ferry Ticket: ₩8,000 for the return trip
  • Parking Fee at Seongsan Port: ₩8,000
  • Korea GPS Tel No: 783-0533

Stay: Yedaoom Pension

Yedaoom Pension aka The corner

Our last two nights are stayed at Yedaoom Pension aka At Corner. It is a wooden holiday house with an overlooked garden where you can have a BBQ there and features a nice view of the sea from far. The location is also very strategic with 10 minutes drive to the airport.

Day 5: Hike Up To Mt Hallasan

Hike Up To Mount Hallasan

Natural hikers don’t miss out on the opportunity to hike up to the tallest mountain in South Korea! Mt Hallasan is the most memorable landmark of Jeju Island with an altitude of 1950 meters above sea level. It is an active volcano but the last eruption was 1007 years.

Hike up to the summit via Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa trails. Alternatively, Yeongsil or Eorimok is a good option for those who want to enjoy a stunning view of the mountain but it won’t take you to the top.

Day 6: Northwest Coastline (Aewol)

We did not plan for any attraction on our last day. Instead, we decided to spend our time on the beautiful beaches in the northwest before leaving Jeju.

Geumneung and Hyeopjae Beach

Hyeopjae Beach

Thanks to the beautiful sandy white beaches with crystal clear azure seawater, Geumneung, and Hyeopjae beach are popular beach gateways. These two beaches are just next to each other, so it is very good to visit in one go.

The long seashore is around nine kilometers long with beautiful white sand and black lava rocks. Together with the clear pristine waters, making the scenery at Geumneung and Hyeopjae beach is very beautiful.

Be ready to dip your toes into clear water and walk along the shore. You can easily spot the seaweed in the crystal clear water.

Hyeopjae Beach Cafe

Picked a cafe nearby for a cup of coffee.

Enjoy your day listening to the classical music inside while drinking a cappuccino with the ocean view.  You’d think you’re in Hawaii or something from the picture-perfect window views!

Budget And Expenses For 6 Days

How much to spend in Jeju for 6 days? My 6 days Jeju road trip is not a budget trip, we enjoy eating fresh abalone, seafood pot, grilled black pork, or drinking a cup of coffee with a nice dessert at a cafe. However, we did not do a lot of shopping on Jeju island and major activities are sign-seeing and food hunting.

Below is my rough estimation for my Jeju trip for your reference. We almost spend ₩550,000 on the 6 days Jeju road trip itinerary, not including the flight ticket. You may spend lesser if you are not fancy about the seafood.

Most restaurants, cafes, and hotels are accepted credit cards. But you are advised to exchange some Korean won for personal use. Certain pension, haenyeo stalls, and food stalls at the traditional market are only in cash.

The expenses listed are for 2 people (for reference):

  • Accommodation: ₩300,000 for 5-night stay at 3-star to 4-star hotel or pension
  • Car rental with CDW covered: ₩160,000 for Hyundai RAY for 6 days
  • Gasoline expenses for a round island trip in 6 days: ₩60,000
  • Entrance and parking fee: ₩28,000

Food expenses:

  • Medium to light breakfast and lunch, ₩20,000
  • Dessert or snack, ₩15,000

Hiking Mount Hallasan, the tallest mountain in South Korea is a must-do for every Korean. See how we join the hike to the summit during my Jeju road trip.

Hike up to the top of Mount Hallasan, the tallest mountain in South Korea is a must-do for every Korean. During our road trip journey at Jeju, we took the opportunity to join the hike to the highest point of South Korea, the summit of Mount Hallasan.

Natural hikers don’t miss out on the opportunity!

Considering its popularity, limited information can be found about hiking Mount Hallasan. So hopefully my hiking experience to the summit of Hallasan Mountain can help to ease your coming hiking journey.

Overview: Mountain Hallasan

Standing proudly at the center of Jeju Island, Mt Hallasan is the most memorable landmark of Jeju Island with an altitude of 1950 meters above sea level. Listed as World Natural Heritage in 2007, Mount Hallasan is an active volcano but does not react for a very long time. The last volcanic eruption of Mount Hallasan was 1007 years.

Hiking at Mt Hallasan is only limited to day hikes as it is very dangerous at night due to the trail condition. Time control varies depending on the season and is strictly enforced to climb down before the sunset. Take note that hiking hours are subject to change according to season and park rangers’ discretion.

For more information on climbing Mt. Hallasan, check the visitJeju official website.

Mt Hallasan Hiking Trails Option

Hallasan Hiking Trails
Hallasan Hiking Trails

There are many hiking routes available. Seongpanak, Gwaneumsa, Yeongsil, Eorimok are the four common trails listed. However, not all of the trails can reach the summit. The Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa trails are the only two that allowed you to the top of Mount Hallasan.

  • Seongpanak Trail: Most popular and convenient hike to the peak (4.5 hours for one way).
  • Gwaneumsa Trail: Most beautiful hike but steepest among all the hikes to the peak (5 hours for one way).
  • Yeongsil Trail: Popular during fall foliage. (2 hours for one way).
  • Eorimok Trail: Most used by tourists (1-2 hours for one way).

  • Length:  8.7 km / 5 hours for one way

Preparation Before The Hike

Driving Journey To Mount Hallasan
Driving Journey To Mount Hallasan

Jeju City with almost 30-40 minutes of driving journey to the entrance of the Seongpanak trail. We bought some snacks, and energy drinks at the Emart nearby and have a good rest before the hike.

We were staying in Yedaoom Pension at Jeju City with almost 30-40 minutes of driving journey to the entrance of the Seongpanak trail. We bought some snacks, and energy drinks at the Emart nearby and have a good rest before the hike.

First of all, we choose to start our driving journey to the entrance of Seongpanak at 6.30 a.m to give more buffer time for our hike. The 30 minutes driving journey is very breath-taking during the early morning. We are soon arriving at the entrance of Seongpanak without noticing the time passing by. Ample car park is available at the Seongpanak entrance.

If you need help in choosing a reliable car rental company in Jeju, take a look at RentalCars from Booking.com. It has a high reputation among customers and easily navigates to compare various car rentals for the best price guarantee.

Useful Tips: Hiking Mount Hallasan

  • Start Earlier: I seriously under-estimated how long it takes to climb Mt Hallasan – and to descend. Depending on which route you take, you might spend as many as 10 hours on the return journey. Start earlier in the morning to give more buffer time for your hiking journey.
  • Energy bar and water: Be sure to drink enough water to keep you hydrated along the hiking journey. There is a store selling water and snack at the shelter but sometimes might not open. It’s still better to bring enough water and snack for the hike.
  • Footwear: The rocky path can be uneven and hiking shoes or boots are a better option to protect your ankles especially during descending.
  • Hiking Equipment: Not a necessity but it helps to relieve some of the burden on your knee with a handy hiking stick.

From Seongpanak Entrance To Sokbat Shelter

We start our Mt Hallasan itinerary after warm-up. At the entrance, a clear information on the time control to reach Jindallaebat Shelter before 13:00. You are prohibited to continue if you are unable to pass Jindallaebat Shelter before the controlled time. So make sure to start early and plan your hike accordingly based on your physical strength.

The Seongpanak trail takes about 9 hours with 19.8 kilometers for return.

As shown above, different difficulty levels along the Seongpanak hike. Yellow/Easy from Seongpanak’s trailhead to Sokbat shelter, slowly getting harder to the Jindallaebat Shelter (Green/Normal) and the hardest part is the last 2.3km before reaching the summit, Baengnokdam (Red/Hard).

The hiking trail is well organized with informative signboards placed at each hiking point. Some trails are even covered with a twine woven blanket, which is super comfortable to walk. Be very careful on the rocky path with volcanic stone along the trail even at the starting point.

Sokbat Shelter
Sokbat Shelter

Arrived at Sokbat shelter at an altitude of 1070 meters. Restrooms and shelters are available here for resting but no water. We took a 10 minutes rest at Sokbat Shelter and went to the restroom. The condition of the restroom is very terrible, and we end up giving up.

The Climb to Jindallaebat Shelter

Rocky Path Along The Trail
Rocky Path Along The Trail

We continue pushed on our hiking journey from Sokbat shelter after the 10 minutes rest. The level of difficulty change from easy to normal. We started entering the nature reserve by passing through the wooden planks, and wooden bridge and continue to hike up. The rocky path starts to become steeper and rockier which makes your hike getting harder.

We didn’t rest when reaching Saraoreum Entrance and continued to push on to Jindallaebat Shelter. Again, the remainder is on the time control for the allowable ascent time.

The trail is in good condition with well wooden stairs and rope to hold to ease on climbing. But, what keeps on playing in my mind is “Stair, Stair, and more stair”.

Jindallaebat Shelter

After almost an hour of endless climb, we finally arrived at Jindallaebat Shelter, a perfect resting point after our 3 hours of hiking journey from the start point. I took this opportunity for a restroom break and relaxed for our weary legs. The condition of the restroom at Jindallaebat Shelter is much better than at the Sokbat shelter.

There is a store selling snacks at Jindallaebat Shelter, but unfortunately not open on that day. Luckily we have enough water to stay hydrated.

The view must be very breath-taking if we are coming during the purple azaleas blossom season.

Final Ascent To The Summit

Final Ascent To The Summit

The last ascending point to the summit is very challenging and harder. Compare with the easy-to-normal hike before reaching the Jindallaebat Shelter, it was another level of challenge for us.

Sharp Rocky Pathway

Some of the climbs are pretty sharp and steep as everything that can make for a soft landing is now gone. Be sure to be extra careful not failing down or hurt by the rocky stone along the pathway.

We took more rest when getting to a higher altitude.

At some point, the forest starts to disappear and the trees are gradually replaced by clouds. See the wooden staircase in front, we are almost reaching the summit. Come on!

Altitude of 1900 Meter
The altitude of 1900 Meter

When you are at an altitude of 1900 meters, you will know that there is another 50 meters to the summit. The view behind was gorgeous with the entire forest underneath us. My legs are cramped and I need to rest for a few minutes for each move. Countless steps with endless points, but we know that we are slowly approaching the summit. The scenic route is the only motivation that makes us continue to move on.

The Top Of South Korea – Mt Hallasan

Resting Platform at The Peak of Mount Hallasan
Resting Platform at The Peak of Mount Hallasan

We finally did it! The top of South Korea.

At the summit, there is a large open area for the hikers to take some rest. Hikers were busy taking photography at the obligatory summit stone and the crater lake.

Baengnokdam
Baengnokdam

Baengnokdam, also meaning “white deer lake” is a volcanic lake at the summit of Mount Hallasan. Unfortunately, the water is almost dried out during our hike.

View from the summit of mount Hallasan

The hike-up journey took us almost 5 hours to reach the summit. We are resting for almost 30 minutes, eating our energy bar to restore some of the energy while enjoying the view at the top of South Korea.

Note: You need to carry your trash off the mountain. There are no bins at the shelter or anywhere along the trail.

The Descending Journey

The Descending Journey
The Descending Journey from Mt Hallasan

We are descending to the ground by using the same route, the Seongpanak trail. The descending route is much more torture compared with the ascent. You are required to find a good balance and landing point between the uneven rocky path.

Our sincere advice, try to keep your step smaller and descent using the sideways to protect your knee. Our knees and ankles are so painful during the descending journey. More rest is required to relieve the pain to continue our journey.

We use a long time with approximately 5 hours to reach the ground from the summit. The tourist center information office is closed sharp at 5 p.m. and we failed to get the certificate for the climb. It doesn’t matter as the hiking experience is more memorable compared with the tiny piece of paper.

This Mt Hallasan travel blog recorded my hiking journey from the bottom to the summit. Hiking Mount Hallasan was so tired but satisfied. It had been a long but great hike.

First of all, choosing what to do and deciding on your transportation is a great starting point for your accommodation search. Getting the right transportation can save on your traveling time, and get a better deal on your accommodation regardless of homestay, budget, and luxury hotel.

However, for first-time visitors, where to stay in Jeju Island is the most headache question. The island is not huge but it will be very tiring to travel from North to South in one day. It is likely that you will find yourself on Jeju Island for at least a few days!

Jeju Island is surrounded by sea with Hallsan mountain located at the center of the island. Mapped into four distinctive parts in North, West, South, and East, you can visit Jeju Island in four days by round island trip. Not to forget the two major cities for your accommodation selection at Jeju Island – Jeju city in the North and Seogwipo city in the South.

Choosing the right accommodation is the first step in deciding where you stay and the next spot you will be. Below is a breakdown of Jeju’s best accommodation listed from my research and recommended based on my Jeju road trip travel. Generally, Jeju Island can be separated into 4 areas when deciding where to stay. There is Jeju city in the North, Seogwipo in the South, Seongsan in the East, and lastly Aewol in the Northwest.

Here are the quick tips when looking for where to stay in Jeju island:

  • Jeju City is a great base when looking for where to stay on this tiny island. We recommended for old town area or public transport accessible. The best option if you’re unsure where to stay.
  • Seogwipo is the second biggest city in Jeju. The accommodation in Seogwipo will be cheaper compared with Jeju city. Choose the best accommodation with a sea view to enjoy your trip. This is the best place to stay in Jeju for a holiday gateway.
  • Experience the unique Korean pension at Seongsan. Coupled up the Udo island and Seongsan Ilchulbong visit into one day.
  • Aewol is famous for its beautiful sea view and sand white beaches. Stay here for a relaxing gateway!

Is it better to stay in a local pension in Jeju?

There are many local traditional pensions run by locals, especially in rural areas like the west and east coast. Take a night to explore how the locals stay at their pensions.

Jeju City, The North

Jeju City, the capital of Jeju Island, is located in the north part and this is the main entrance to enter Jeju Island regardless of by air or by sea. For convenience, stay in Jeju City. It is also the best place to do shopping and food hunting. Staying in Jeju city is the most convenient place when visiting Jeju island.

Where To Stay in Jeju City

Dongmun Market Entrance

Great base to explore the vibrant city with strategic location by walking distance to nearby eatery and shopping. Just a leisure walk to Black Pork Street, Sashimi street, Dongmun market, and Jungang underground shopping street.

Located in the old town area, the hotels listed can easily access the city must’s see attraction with lots of eateries, shopping, and convenient shops surrounded.

Not to forget the harbor front ocean view where you can stroll along the coastal walkway with the breezing wind. A good option for those looking for comfortable and convenient accommodation on Jeju Island.

Best Hotel in Jeju-si old town area:

While the new town area will have more entertainment and restaurant options. You’ll also have more accommodations when choosing where to stay in Jeju city. It is busier and more developed when compared to the other areas on Jeju Island.

Best Hotel in Jeju-si new town area:

Hotels With Public Transport Accessible

For those who are not planning for self-driving, public transport is the major consideration in deciding your accommodation. Getting around by bus is the cheapest way to explore the beautiful island. The transportation hub is their intercity bus terminals run between Jeju City and Seogwipo with different routes. Those city buses make several stops cover most of the island including major tourist attractions for visitors.

Best Hotel near Jeju intercity bus station:

We Stayed: Whistle Lark Hotel

Hotel Whistle Lark

On the first day, once we landed in Jeju, we decided to stay in Whistle Lark Hotel in Jeju city. It is a 4-star hotel at a reasonable price in the old town area. We walked to Dongmun Market and black pork street to enjoy our dinner.

Seogwipo, The South

Our next recommendation on where to stay in Jeju is Seogwipo. The vibrant Seogwipo is the second-largest city located in the south of the island. It is the best location to explore the charming natural beauty but still ease of transport for getting around. The city is near to most of the natural attractions on Jeju island to see and visit.

Where to stay in Seogwipo City

Jeongbang Waterfall

Stay at Seogwipo city when you are traveling on the southern coastline. The price of accommodation at Seogwipo is much more cheaper compared with the city area on the north side in a similar range. You can stay at a four or five-star hotel at a cheaper price at Seogwipo. Don’t forget to check out the three famous waterfalls and the quirky museums located at Seogwipo, the southern part of Jeju.

Unique Experience with Pension Runs By Locals

The southern coastline has many wonderful pension runs by locals. Normally those pensions are very unique and feature a very beautiful view, either in-room basic for two people or the whole unit for a group of members. Instead of keeping staying at a hotel, experience by staying one or two nights at the pension. You won’t regret your decision for staying on a pension.

Additionally, we also included the top 10 best guesthouse in Jeju. Most of them are facing the sea view. If you are interested, take a look at our accommodation guide below.

Best pension in Seogwipo with sea view:

We Stayed: Jeju Aurum

Sea View from Balcony Jeju Aurum

During our road trip, we stayed at Jeju Aurum for one night. A warm welcome from the host with a beautiful sunrise and sunset view can be seen from the front of the pension. Don’t forget to book earlier as limited room available offered from the pension.

Seongsan, The East

There are two major attractions on the eastern coastline, Sunrise Peak Seongsan Ilchulbong, and Udo Island. Both are located very close and ideal coupled for a day trip. Driving from the Northside of the city or south of Seogwipo city will simply need an hour of driving journey to reach the east coastline.

Where to Stay in Seongsan

Seongsan Ilchulbong

Staying one night on the east coast is one of the good options, especially for those planning for the sunrise at Seongsan Ilchulbong. Some of the accommodations can be so close to the Seongsan Ilchulbong by less than 10 minutes of walking distance. The view of Seongsan Ilchulbong is so spectacular, especially during sunrise.

Best hotel nearby Seongsan Ilchulbong:

One Night At Udo Island

Udo Island is the miniature of Jeju Island with sandy white beaches and scenic peaks with a lava coastline. Spending a day at Udo Island is perfect for relaxing in a peaceful calm atmosphere. However, limited accommodation is offered on Udo island with only a few pensions run by locals located close to the Udo Harbor. Book early if you plan for a night at Udo Island.

Best stay on Udo Island:

We Stayed: B&Sun Pension

B&Sun Pension Jeju

B&Sun Pension is our accommodation stay during our trip to East Coastline. We woke up earlier to Seongsan Ilchulbong for sunrise which is located less than 10 minutes from the hotel. Next, we proceeded on a half-day trip to Udo Island by bicycle.

Aewol, The Northwest

The areas like Aewol, Hallim, Hangyeong, Hyeopjae, and Byyang-do are under my northwest part of the coastline. If you are familiar with Jeju geography, you definitely know that those listed locations are famous for the beautiful sea view and sand white beaches.

Where to stay in Aewol

Hyeopjae Beach

Many beautiful beaches can be found around the island but nowhere can beat the northwest coastline. The Hyeopjae beach is the most beautiful beach with crystal clear water and sand white beaches. Enjoy your day by tipping your toes into the sea and building sandcastle at beaches.

Best sea view hotel at Aewol:

We Stayed: Yedaoom Pension

Yedaoom Pension

We stayed at Yedaoom pension (aka at Corner) for my last two nights during our Jeju road trip. This pension features an overlooked garden and a nice view of the sea. The pension is not very brand new but well equipped and clean. Located closer to Jeju city, it is only 10 minute’s drive to the airport.

Where We Stayed During Jeju Road Trip

Jeju Road Trip

I finally make my visit to Jeju Island with one of my best friends by self-driving. For the past 6 days of the road trip journey, we stayed at a few locations like the city area in the north, Seogwipo in the south, and Seongsan in the East.

We highly recommended renting a car to explore the hidden beauty at your own pace. Many accommodation options are available to choose from if you don’t restrict by transportation. I prefer to stay at the pension run by locals rather than the hotel. However, wherever you decide to stay in Jeju, I’m sure you’ll have fun. It is such an amazing island!

I hope my Jeju travel blog helps you choose the best accommodation in Jeju Island, South Korea! Thanks for reading and happy travel!

Jeju Food Guide: Charcoal Grilled Black Pork, Neulbom Heukdwaeji

posted in: Jeju Island, South Korea | 0

Last updated on April 27th, 2024

If you have a chance on Jeju Island, don’t miss the chance to try their grilled black pork. Neulbom Heukdwaeji (늘봄흑돼지) is a renowned restaurant among the locals for their Samgyeopsal, the bossless cut of pork belly. Neulbom Heukdwaeji grilled the black pork meat over charcoal instead of a gas stove so its naturally sweet taste won’t be lost.

We tried the Dombedon, a popular grilled black pork restaurant in the black port street during our first night at Jeju. The taste was so delicious and unforgettable. So we decided to have another round of grilled black pork before leaving Jeju. The charcoal grill method is one of the main reasons we choose the Neulbom Heukdwaeji.

Neulbom Heukdwaeji Restaurant

Neulbom Heukdwaeji Restaurant

Neulbom Heukdwaeji occupied a two stories building with plenty of car parks available. We are served at a table on the lower floor.

The inside of the Neulbom is very wide and spacious with lots of tables. Most of their customer is local Korean families with kids and groups of friends who come to enjoy their dinner here. Smoke removal equipment is on every table so no worry about the smoky smell.

How To Order At Neulbom Heukdwaeji

Neulbom Heukdwaeji Menu

The menu of Neulbom is standard in Korean and English and Mandarin translated below. We choose the recommendation from the waitress on the first and second items on the menu, Samgyeopsal pork belly, and pock neck.

Minimum one order per person for dine-in at Neulbom which is standard for Korean BBQ restaurants. We also added bibimbap on top of our meat order.

Yangnyeom Gejang Side Dishes

yangnyeom gejang

Banchan (starters/side dishes) are served quickly with a wide variety of choices like kimchi, onion, radish side dishes, and salad. One of the side dishes catch my attention, was the yangnyeom gejang (seasoned spicy raw crab). I noticed it a few times when I visited Jeju’s traditional market and this is the first time I can try on it.

The eating of the raw crab is tame and hard. I feel it is hard to crew and end up I take out of my mouth.

Charcoal Grilled Pork Belly

Charcoal Grill At Neulbom Heukdwaeji

A BBQ kit is built into the table and a waiter will bring the hot charcoal for you to cook the meat on it.

The waitress is helping us to grill the meat and cut it into slides when the pork starts to turn into brown color. We can start enjoying our charcoal-grilled black pork meal.

Smoky Charcoal Scent Pork Bell

Neulbom Heukdwaeji Samgyeopsal pork belly

The pork was succulent with some of the pork skin getting crispy fried up which gives you a nice very nice texture to chew on it. Wrap the pork belly with the lettuce. But I feel the pork alone is already very delicious and fragrant with a smoky charcoal scent.

You can also dip the meat with fermented anchovy sauce served together but both of us didn’t like it too much.

The dinner goes well with the bibimbap ordered accompanying kimchi, veggies, radish, and anchovies side dishes. I am voted for Neulbom Heukdwaeji compared with Dombedon. Probably because of the smoky charcoal scent, I feel the pork is more crispy and delicious.

Read more about our dining experience in Dombedon.

How To Go To Neulbom Heukdwaeji

Neulbom Heukdwaeji is located in Jeju city and has easy access from Jeju airport with less than 5 minutes drive. We compared and booked our car through RentalCars from Booking.com with the best price guarantee. Driving in Jeju will be more easily accessible to try the must-eat food in Jeju.

Check out how we rent a car and driving in Jeju.
