If you plan to visit, it’s best to arrive before the peak hours.

Seating Area in Gion Duck Noodles

The restaurant has a charming setting, with duck-themed cutlery adding to the ambiance.

There is a seating area at the bar counter for about 5 people and a table seating area for 3 people. We are not recommended for larger groups or families unless you are prepared for a potentially lengthy wait.

Preparing Food - Gion Duck Noodles

Once seated, the chef immediately began preparing our order to ensure we received freshly cooked ramen and reduce the waiting time.

During our visit, we ordered the duck noodles in soup and it will come with 2 pieces of duck meat. We decided to add an extra 6 pieces of duck breast meat for the meal. You can choose between breast and thigh meat based on your preference, and the staff recommended a mix of both.

Tasty Duck Noodles

Gion Duck Noodles in Kyoto

Our bowl of duck ramen arrived less than 5 minutes after we were seated.

The bowl contained tender, properly cooked duck meat, bamboo shoots, and ramen. The presentation of the plates was beautiful, with a sprinkle of some sort of pepper along the edges of the plate that complemented the duck well.

Tender Duck Meat

Duck Meat - Gion Duck Noodles

The duck meat was well-cooked, tender, and delicious.

Light but Flavorful Broth

Light but flavorful Broth

The broth was light but flavorful. It’s not your typical ramen broth like tonkotsu ramen, which is thick and heavy, but you can taste the great flavor of it. A nice and delicious broth!

Chewy Ramen Noodles

Ramen - Gion Duck Noodles

The duck noodles were the star of the dish! The noodles were chewy and i enjoyed eating the noodles.

Egg - Gion Duck Noodles

Our order also comes with the ramen egg. As usual, it was so amazing and best paired with the ramen!

The Gion Duck Noodles are a bit more expensive compared to other shops, but it’s probably because they use only premium ingredients. You can tell they put a lot of care into crafting their bowls of ramen. One of the best duck noodles I’ve had in Japan.

Overall: Must-Eat Kyoto Duck Noodles

All in all, Gion Duck Noodles is on a whole different level. The food is delicious, and you honestly can’t go wrong with any dish or variation of dishes you choose from their impressive menu. The service was amazing, and the overall experience was exceptional. A must-try while in the Kyoto/Gion area.

If you are a ramen enthusiast and would like to taste one of the best Kyoto ramen, the Michelin Bib Gourmand – Menya Inoichi is your choice. The food was exceptional, simple but with very high-quality ingredients.

Menya Inoichi is a Michelin Bib Gourmand ramen restaurant where I had this delicious bowl of shiro shoyu ramen. This tiny ramen shop is one of the most highly-rated ramen shops among locals and travelers. The shop was also in the spotlight after it was recognized by Michelin Bib Gourment for years. Let’s check out my food review on Menya Inoichi.

Menya Inoichi

Menya Inoichi

Men-ya Inoichi is a tiny 10-seat ramen joint in downtown Kyoto. The convenient location and nod from Michelin Bib Gourmand Guid has made it popular with tourists. Due to the popularity, the waiting can be quite long.

Menya Inoichi has another branch, Men-ya Inoichi Hanare in Kyoto.

Men-ya Inoichi (麺屋 猪一)
Address: 542 Ebisunocho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto.
Business Hours: Daily from 11:00 to 14:30, 17:30 to 21:00

Men-ya Inoichi Hanare (麺屋 猪一 離れ)
Address: Japan, 〒600-8076 Kyoto, Shimogyo Ward, Senshojicho.
Business Hours: Daily from 11:00 to 14:30, 17:30 to 21:00

Expected to pay ¥1,500 to ¥3,000 per person.

Menya Inoichi Kyoto

We went to Men-ya Inoichi to taste Kyoto’s best ramen. We arrived 30 minutes before opening time when the line was already more than 20 people. For late comer, you’ll get a ticket to come back later. We took about 50 minutes to get seated.

Noted that photography is strictly prohibited inside the premises at Menya Inoichi except for food.

The ramen shop is simple with a cool interior design. It has a beautiful minimalist interior with counter seating.

Menya Inoichi Menu

Menya Inoichi Menu

Service was extremely good and the waiters could speak very good English. You can look through the menu while waiting. Their Chinese and English menu has very good explanations for each item to be ordered.

Men-ya Inoichi carries multiple types of ramen.

The menu goes beyond typical pork ramen to include wagyu beef option! Menya is renown for its dashi and bonito broths. You can get a choice of shiro shoyu (white soy sauce) or black soy for your base. We ordered different broth for tasting.

Check out Menya Inoichi Official website for their latest menu and pricing.

Their ramen is a bit more expensive compared to other restaurants, almost doubling the cost of some other shops. Probably because they use only premium ingredients.

Shiro Shoyu (White Soy Sauce) Ramen

Menya Inoichi Kyoto Michelin Guide Ramen

Here’s a closer look at those delicious ramen from Men-ya Inoichi.

The signature dish “Dashi Soba (Shiro)” with extra topping. The ramen was beautifully presented with all the goodies. Besides the usual noodles and topping, there are also bamboo shoots, green onions, bonito flakes, and half a ramen egg for a complete meal.

I had the white soy sauce ramen and truly enjoyed it.

Among the toppings in the soup, the thin slices of pork are a big highlight. The thickness is just right, and it has enough fat but not too greasy. It was delicious and went so well with the seafood flavors of the ramen.

Menya Inoichi shiro shoyu ramen

The seafood broth is made by blending various types of dried bonito flakes sourced from Kagoshima. The resulting dashi broth is light yet rich, bursting with umami. It has an overall gentle flavor, but is still, full of deep rich seafood flavor.

The ultra-thin shaved bonito flakes add depth to the flavor. The marinated soft-boiled egg was perfect!

While the noodles are slightly firmer than other common ramen shops.

Dark Soy Ramen

Menya Inoichi black soy ramen

While my friend have the dark soy ramen. The soup is more thick but not too fatty. Both were incredibly flavorful and at the time, the most complex and nuanced bowls of ramen we had ever tasted.

Menya Inoichi Condiment

At the counter, there are various types of spices and condiments available on the table. You can use them to enhance your dining experience.

Menya Inoichi Shredded Kelp

Special highlight: There is freshly shredded kelp (konbu), which can be used as a condiment for the broth. You can add shredded kelp to increase the soup’s saltiness. However, we recommend that you taste the original soup first before adding any, as it can be slightly salty.

Overall: Kyoto Michelin Guide Menya Inoichi

In short, if you are looking for the best ramen in Kyoto, Menya Inoichi is definitely worth a try. The quality of their ramen is exceptional and they offer a memorable dining experience.

However, be prepared for a long wait as the queue can take up to 90 minutes. If you have a tight schedule, this may not be the best option for you. But if you can plan ahead and arrive early, you won’t be disappointed with the taste and quality of the ramen. Overall, I highly recommend Menya Inoichi for an authentic and delicious ramen experience in Kyoto.

Himeji Castle Itinerary

When in Himeji City, visiting the Himeji Castle is a must-do for your itinerary.

Unlike other castles in Japan, Himeji Castle (姫路城) stands out for its unique and famous brilliant white color. Most Japanese castles have white walls and dark roofs, but Himeji Castle has light gray roofs, which give it a clean and minimalistic all-white look. It’s no wonder that this castle is known as “Hakurojo” or the “White Heron Castle”. It looks different and stands out from other Japanese castles.

Himeji Itinerary - A Travel Guide Blog

Himeji Castle, one of the few original castles in Japan, was constructed between 1601 and 1609.

Despite facing battles and political unrest with feudal lords, the castle survived through the years. It is rated as one of the Top Three Japan Premier Castles, alongside Kumamoto Castle and Matsumoto Castle. Himeji Castle is the most famous and visited castle in Japan, with almost three million visitors each year.

Like other castles in Japan, the interior of the Himeji Castle is empty and devoid of furniture.

However, there are some noteworthy architectural features and displays to observe as you navigate through the various floors in the castle.

The castle gets more and more narrow as you reach the top and the stairs get steeper, but you get a nice view at the top.

You’ll need a few hours to explore the area as this place is huge. So be sure to plan your Himeji itinerary accordingly if you want to spend time on the historical building.

Wooden Structure of Himeji Castle

Entrance to the castle is ¥1,000 for adults. But you can get a combination ticket for the Himeji Castle and Koko-en Garden at ¥1,050. This is truly a great deal and you can spend time to see the Japanese garden.

Koko-en Garden

Kokoen Garden

Just a short walk from the west of the castle’s main gate (Otemon Gate), you’ll find another beautiful Japanese Garden.

The Koko-en Garden (好古園) was established in 1620, after the construction of Himeji Castle. The garden was built next to the Castle. The garden was the former site of the Nishi-Oyashiki, the feudal lord’s West Residence area.

The tranquil Koko-en Garden has nine different themes. Stroll along the meandering walking paths will take you through the different sections of the garden. There is a large central pond with a bridge that makes for a nice photo spot. Taking a stroll through the grounds is one of the most relaxing things to do in Himeji.

I’ve been to a few gardens in Japan, but Koko-en was one of my favorites. Although it isn’t as big or impressive as Kenroku-en in Kanazawa, I found its design to be pleasant and relaxing. I was particularly impressed by the surrounding area, which is surrounded by this amazing park and makes for a picturesque stroll.

Koko-en Garden (好古園)

There are many beautiful castles in Japan and some of them can be very similar. But we would highly recommended you visit the Himeji Castle. Below we will share some of the food experience at Hai Kah Lang PJ Seapark branch.

The restaurant is a two-story shop located at the corner of a line of shops. As soon as you walk in, you’ll be amazed by how busy it is. Everyone was waiting patiently to be seated.

Their ordering system is efficient. Just took a number from the counter and wait for it to be called. While waiting, the waiter will take your order to save time once you are seated.

During peak hours, queues are expected, but they move quickly. We waited for about 20 minutes to be seated, but it was worth it.

Hai Kah Lang Open Kitchen

The staff can be seen preparing the food in the open kitchen, and you can also catch a glimpse of their fresh seafood from the aquarium and kitchen area.

The Hai Kah Lang has opened a new outlet on Jalan Imbi, across from TRX. This location is very convenient and has become popular among locals and foreign visitors alike. Many people come here to enjoy fresh seafood. As expected, there was already a lively queue winding its way outside the restaurant. Chairs were set up for waiting patrons.

Hai Kah Lang TRX Food Review

The dining areas are quite spacious and they even have large round tables for big groups. We waited for almost an hour during lunchtime on the weekend.

Similar to the other branches, Hai Kah Lang TRX also has a spacious kitchen area where guests can observe the staff in action. A variety of fresh seafood is displayed in fish tanks and on ice.

What To Eat in Hai Kah Lang

Hai Kah Lang Menu

There are many delicious options to choose from at Hai Kah Lang’s menu. Firstly, you can select from a variety of seafood including fish, clams, octopus, lobster, oysters, and more.

Next, you can choose your broth from options such as clear soup with rice wine, tom yum, and laksa. Lastly, you can also select your preferred noodles. If you prefer, you can also just order seafood without the noodles. This is a great option for people who just want to savor the seafood without the noodles.

The side dishes menu also offers exciting options such as fried fishcake, braised shark lips, blanched octopus, and fresh raw oysters.

For those trying it for the first time, we recommend the mixed seafood bowl which includes a variety of seafood such as crab, clams, fish, squid, and shrimp all in one bowl. Other popular options include fried fish head noodles, clam, or grouper fish noodles.

Prices vary based on the seafood of your choice, but generally range from RM18 to RM30 for a bowl of seafood noodles. Prepare to spend about RM40 including the drinks.

Mixed Seafood Noodles Bowl

Hai Kah Lang Mixed seafood bowl

When we first time visited Hai Kah Lang, we ordered the Hai Kah Lang’s signature – mixed seafood bowl with clear soup.

The huge bowl is so fabulous, and it came with fleshy small flower crabs, a tiger prawn, boneless grouper fish, clams, lots of squids, and our choice of mixian noodles.

Hai Kah Lang Fresh Seafood

The seafood was cooked impeccably and retained its freshness. It was a great experience to taste all the freshness seafood in one bowl.

Hai Kah Lang Seafood Noodle

The broth’s flavor was exceptional, with aromas of Huadiao wine and a delightful blend of rich and aromatic taste. It was topped with a slight amount of garlic oil, which enhanced the flavor and made it so tasty!

Don’t forget to try the noodles with the belacan dip. It has a subtle tanginess that complements the seafood well and it’s not too spicy. It’s truly addictive!

Fish Head Noodles

Hai Kah Lang fish head noodles

The Seafood bowl is so delicious. We keep returned to try out their remaining dishes on the menu.

Hai Kah Lang is also famous for its signature Fish Head Noodles. The dish comprises a bowl of noodles in milky soup, accompanied by fresh pieces of different parts of a grouper’s head in another bowl. The flavorful milky broth is one of the highlights of this dish.

You are opted to choose clear soup or milky soup.

Red Snapper Fish Noodles

Hai Kah Lang Fish Snapper Noodles

Another excellent recommendation is the exquisite Red Snapper Fish Noodles.

It’s a perfect option for those who want to savor the fish’s sweetness. The bowl retains the natural essence of the fish, adding to the overall delightful taste of the dish.

Hai Kah Lang Tom Yum Prawn Noodles

We also tried tiger prawn or ming prawn options for those who love prawns. The Tom Yum version is particularly flavorful. However, please note that the Tom Yum soup needs to pay for additional fee but it’s worth it.

For me, it is worth the try but I still prefer the freshness of the clear soup.

Side Dishes

Hai Kah Lang Side Dish Octopus
Hai Kah Lang Side Dish Clams

We ordered a small plate of baby octopus and clams.

The food were cooked to perfection with the right timing and served with a delicious dipping sauce. I enjoyed the taste, but the serving size was too small. Perhaps I should order more next time.

Overall: Hai Kah Lang Seafood Noodles

Hai Kah Lang Michelin Bib Gourmand Award

All in all, Hai Kah Lang is an excellent place for seafood enthusiast who looking for a satisfying meal. The seafood noodles are exceptionally delicious and made with fresh ingredients. The wait may be long at peak hour, but the freshness of the seafood make the long wait worthwhile.

We was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices, and I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a seafood bowl. Their seafood noodles is a must-try dish that will leave you craving for more.
