However, if you happen to be in Phu Quoc, make sure to try the Bun Quay, which is a type of noodle soup that comes with seafood toppings made from freshly mashed fish, shrimp, and squid. If you want to enjoy a delicious bowl of Bun Quay, it’s important to choose a quality eatery. In Phu Quoc, there are many places to enjoy Bun Quay, and each offers a unique experience. However, the most renowned restaurant is Bun Quay Kien Xay.
This restaurant has been serving some of the city’s best Bun Quay since the 1960s, and is known for its fresh, aromatic flavor and high-quality ingredients. Even locals frequently visit this restaurant for their delicious bowl. If you want to experience the best Bun Quay in Phu Quoc, this is the place to go.
The restaurant has been featured on every “must-eat food” list in Phu Quoc. Kien Xay has several locations on the island, so be sure to find the one nearest to you.
What To Eat at Bun Quay Kien Xay
My friends and I decided to visit Bun Quay Kien Xay. The restaurant is located near the King Kong Mart, which is the best place for some food after shopping for souvenirs. As soon as we arrived, we noticed a long queue of people waiting to have their Bun Quay, which indicated how popular it is.
The restaurant has a large dining area with two stories for seating. Ground floor is bustling with diners and while the second floor is adorned with lush greenery.
The ordering process is simple and easy. First, you need to find a table to sit at. Then, you can queue up, pay for your order, and wait for your number to be called. Once your number is called, you can collect your bowl of Bun Quay and enjoy it.
The menu is available in Vietnamese and English translation. It offers various options such as squid, shrimp paste, fish cake patties, and thin slices of beef to add to your noodles. The price varies depending on your selection. The staff is friendly and speaks basic English, making it convenient for travelers.
Dipping Sauce
There is an interesting feature available for diners where they can create their own dipping sauce.
At the restaurant, there is a counter that includes five essential ingredients such as salt, sugar, chili, monosodium glutamate (MSG), and kumquat juice. You can mix these ingredients individually according to your taste preferences to make your ideal dipping sauce. It is important to stir the sauce well to ensure that you have the best experience with Bun Quay.
Freshly Prepare Bun Quay
The Bun Quay Kien Xay restaurant has an open kitchen that allows you to see how they prepare the Bun Quay right in front of you. The skilled cooks are busy making the dish, and the noodles are freshly prepared on-site.
They pour the boiling broth into a bowl containing shrimp or fish paste and noodles, and then stir them all together. Finally, the dish is topped with minced scallions and pepper to add flavor.

A Bowl of Delicious Bun Quay
Due to the high volume of diners, it may take some time for your bowl of Bun Quay to be served. You will be notified when your order is ready. It took us almost 30 minutes to receive our bowl, but it was worth the wait.

The noodles were thin, soft, and very chewy. The shrimp and fish paste were fresh and flavorful. While the soup was light but flavorful. It can be enhanced by adding the dipping sauce to it. The combination of the broth and dipping sauce was fantastic and delicious.
We also ordered refreshing sugarcane drinks to cool off from the hot weather. The cooling drink and piping hot bun quay were a perfect match!
Overall: Must-Eat Bun Quay in Phu Quoc
All in all, we highly recommend trying the Bun Quay Kien Xay in Phu Quoc. It is a must-try dish if you are looking for what to eat in Phu Quoc. The soft and chewy noodles perfectly complement the shrimp, fish paste, and broth, making the overall taste so delicious. The taste is absolutely delightful, and the prices are reasonable.
